The sphere is the starting point, sort of an area to start your marker. I am not sure about the one by the number nine, usually you have to hop around back to the starting point.

And I've NEVER seen a semicircle at the start like that. It's phallic enough to have it on one end, to have it on both now turns it into a double-sided-dildo. :(
It looks wrong because there ISN'T ever a semi circle at the starting point; this is an error on the creator's part. I don't like any semi circles at the end either, but that's my personal preference.
Also the end semi circle looks especially 'bad' because it's usually a LOT wider. I like the idea of this, but much like the rest of you, it makes me a tad uncomfortable...
Erm.... did it ever occur to any of you, that since the creator is from sweden, that kids in sweden might play hopscotch a little different? And that because of that, it might look a little different as well?

I didn't use semicircles, and at the end we used a 10 instead of a another semicircle, if I remember well.
